About the Project

This site was developed during Special Projects Week 1998 by three students of the North Carolina School of Science and Math, located in Durham, NC. Special Projects Week is a week set aside for group and individual projects that would not normally be incorporated in the regular curiculum. In 1998, Special Project Week, or SPW, ran from March 11 to March 17, with March 18 as a Sharing Day.

The History Department sponsored day trips to Civil War battle and historical sites over SPW. These trips were attended by approximately 15 people per day. Trips were taken to Petersburg, Wilmington, local Durham sites, Richmond, and Appomattox. Each student who attended these trips had an individual project or focus for the week, and an individual sponsor from the History Department.

As our focus, we chose to design a web site with pictures and information from each of the locations that we visited. We took pictures using digital cameras and scanned maps and brochures from the sites to incorporate into our designs. Graphical editing was done using Photoshop® and PictureWorks' PhotoEnhancer®. All HTML design was done using Notepad®, WordPad®, Red Hat Linux Version 4.2 (Biltmore)®, and vi.
